Every successful restaurant has a “behind the scenes” story to tell. This is Vela’s…  

After 17 fruitful years of assisting with her husband’s restaurant in Fourways, Avril was on a mission to find alternate employment for loyal staff members that had been with them up until the closure of the restaurant in September 2018. Whilst en-route from her home in Pecanwood, Hartbeespoort Damn, Avril passed The Fat Olive Country Restaurant and decided to contact the owners to see if they could assist with employment for some of her staff.   

As fate had it, The Fat Olive Country Restaurant was looking to appoint a new Mozambiquean, Portuguese chef and Avril set up a meeting with the owner, Milan to meet the very next day. While chatting, Avril mentioned that she was thinking about opening a small Portuguese shop, which peaked Milan’s interest. Originally from Serbia, Milan has over 20 – years’ experience in the restaurant industry. Milan’s passion to execute fresh, flavourful food and his drive of service delivery is what impressed Avril, and they started plotting their little prawn and chicken take-away Portuguese shop.  

Today, the little prawn and chicken shop, has evolved into Vela – LA Familia – Contemporary Portuguese. The menu, although traditional Portuguese, has a local and original twist with fresh, warm flavours and textures that offers something for any and every palette.
